Top Travel Experiences in the World | My Top 10 Favorite Travel Experiences, Events and Adventures!
Hey there, it’s Mike Swigunski here and I’m the founder of global career and best-selling author of Global Career: How to Work Anywhere and Travel Forever.
Today I’m going to recap my top 10 favorite travel destinations and experiences. I’m primarily going to focus on experiences, events, and impactful things. I try to plan my travels around these unique life experiences instead of just going to a city. It does make things a little bit more memorable and a little bit more exciting now you’re going to want to stick around. I think you’ll be very surprised at what my favorite all-time travel experience is, and I’ll save that to the end, so you’re going to want to stick around to that, and let’s go ahead and dig into my top 10 travel experiences from around the world.
Starting off at number one, and I’ll preface this that these are in no specific order. I did save my favorite one to the end, so again you’re going to want to stick around because I think you’ll be a little surprised by that, so coming in at number one is running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. This is something that I’ve always wanted to do, and I did it very early into my traveling career. I was with a lot of friends and showing up in Pamplona we stayed there without a tent for like three or four days we met a lot of great people it’s essentially just one big party throughout the night they have the running of the bulls in the morning, and then we would go and sleep in a park during the day and then just kind of repeat.
We didn’t have any accommodation we were basically homeless for three days, and it was just such a great atmosphere a beautiful environment, and the people we connected with made it an extremely special experience, so if you ever get a chance to go to one of these festivals it is a lot of fun even if you don’t run with the bulls that were actually an exciting part, but it is very short the whole event itself is the thing that’s a memorable experience.
Moving in at number two is Oktoberfest in Munich Germany uh this was a really unique experience because i just had finished up three months of traveling I’d kind of gotten back for a week to Prague and one of my friends randomly and spontaneously invited me since accommodation and everything books up so far in advance for Oktoberfest he had an extra spot in his car an extra spot in the hostel and essentially i was able to just tag along spontaneously show up to Oktoberfest and had an absolute blast we were able to go to one of the tents where they actually corked the first keg for Oktoberfest the mayor of Munich is there and it’s an extremely fun celebration and there was a lot of great people over like five million people come through for Oktoberfest every year so it is just a massive amount of people enjoying really good beer and some good food and of course some carnival rides so it’s an absolutely worthwhile experience to check off your bucket list and i highly recommend trying to make it to Octoberfest in Germany at some point in your life.
Number three was dog sledding in Latvia. This was an absolutely extremely fun winter experience being able to do dog sledding in a Latvian forest. Then, being able to spend some time with the dogs afterward, they were so energetic, excited, and extremely playful, so I’ll try to post some photos here and some videos and stuff, but dog sledding was one thing we planned to do in Iceland. Still, we realized that it was so overpriced and expensive that we decided to save it for Latvia and I’m glad we did the whole surrounding was wonderful, and it was such a memorable experience that I highly suggest people checking it out.
Coming in at number four was driving a tank in Lithuania. I’m sure you’re wondering there was not really much prerequisite that went into this. It was around 150 euros to drive a tank and then shoot guns afterward per person. They didn’t really give us much training they kind of just handed us over showed us a few things. It was probably a minute of kind of giving us an overview of how the tank worked. We were able to do this in the wintertime in Lithuania, right outside of Vilnius. It was such a fun experience being able to drive a tank throughout this wintry forest of Lithuania and then kind of shooting some guns afterward at a shooting range, shooting an AK-47 and some pistols. It was really exhilarating, and it made it for a special experience in Lithuania.
If you ever get a chance to check out vilnius it’s absolutely a beautiful city especially in the winter time when there’s not that many people there it’s really stunning when it snows there and it’s one of those places that’s a little bit off the beaten path i was extremely impressed with how beautiful the city it was the food’s good the culture’s great and the people were very friendly to us while we were there coming in at number five is celebrating st patrick’s day in dublin ireland i did an internship during college in dublin and i had a lot of friends there but i never had a chance to stay there for st patrick’s day so it was a really great experience to go back there a few years after my internship meet up with some of my friends and my previous co-workers have a few pints celebrate st patrick’s day and really get to experience the city come to life on st paddy’s day so i highly recommend if you ever had the opportunity to go there it is a lot of fun and they definitely know how to party wildly on st patrick’s day.
Number six was Carnevale in brazil. This is probably one of the biggest parties in the world, and it definitely lived up to the hype. It’s an insane party throughout the streets, everyone dancing and essentially doing parades around the city. One of my favorite parts of the carnival was actually a Beatles festival set to samba music, so that was actually one of the highlights for the carnival in Brazil, and it’s definitely worth checking out, especially if you’re going to be able to go to Rio or any other parts of brazil I guarantee you’ll have a great time.
Coming in at number seven was hiking a glacier. Hence, Weier in Patagonia, the glacier we hiked was called pe. It’s absolutely mind-boggling how cool and beautiful this glacier looks. It’s one of the only glaciers that’s actually been growing over the years. I’ll warm, and I’ll post some photos here. It was such a cool experience too. Hence, We are able to walk with crampons. They even let you drink some of the glacier water, and then at the very end, they give you some whiskey. Of course, the ice is from the glacier, and this was such a cool experience being able to spend an hour. We got so lucky with the weather we were walking on this glacier it was pretty sunny a lot of some people were even in t-shirts, so it wasn’t that cool we literally had three or four hours of great weather and then it started cooling down after that if you get a chance. You’re going to be exploring Patagonia. This is definitely worth checking out. It’s one of my all-time favorite experiences.
Number eight is Songkran in Thailand, and essentially, this is a huge water festival, a water gun fight in Thailand, and it happens all over the place people are throwing water at each other in the streets. There are some just huge water fights over a span of a week or so, and everyone’s just having a blast throwing water, kind of having water gunfights. I’ll try to post a video I made on youtube from when I went there. I’ll post a video below so you can check that out if you’re interested in it, but it’s a really fun festival, and there’s a lot of people just getting a little crazy throwing water and just having a great time, so it’s a great way to cool off when you’re exploring Thailand, and it’s really hot.
Coming in at number nine, another one of my top experiences was hitchhiking the entire south island of New Zealand. This essentially took me a month. I was fortunate enough to be able to go at my own pace to explore the south island of New Zealand, and it is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Hence, if you ever get a chance to go there, hitchhiking is definitely a part of their culture. It’s very common to get picked up by kiwis by foreigners, and one of the things that makes it easy to hitchhike in New Zealand is that there’s essentially just one road going around the whole circle of the south island. Hence, it makes it really easy to grab a ride, connect with some fellow travelers, and kind of learn their experience while they’re taking you from point a to point b, so it was an absolutely great time I was able to connect with so many people from all over the world and it’s something that I’ll cherish forever.
Number 10 my last thing on the list, and my all-time favorite thing was travel hacking my way to the Maldives. Hence, being able to get there for essentially 400, we flew from Los Angeles to Doha and then Doha to the Maldives around 400 per flight to get out there, and then we were able to stay in an overwater villa at the Conrad, which is a Hilton brand uh utilize my diamond status to get upgraded to a beautiful overwater villa and overall the Maldives lived up to the hype it was so beautiful it was really peaceful we honestly felt like we had the island to ourselves so it was such a great experience. If you ever get a chance to go there, it’s definitely worth adding it to your bucket list and making it happen.
